1. Where were you born and raised?
DS: I was born and raised in a small Iowa town called Osage.
2. After moving from Iowa to VA Tech with Tom Brands, were you happy to go back?
DS: Home is home. Its exciting to be back in Iowa. And be part of the movement to bring Iowa wrestling to what I knew grewing up and then competed on.
3. What was you final take on all the Iowa/ VA Tech Drama?
DS: With no doubt it was out of spite for Tom Brands. The kids may not have helped by being quoted in papers that they wanted to leave VAT before it was public knowledge. Unfortuntely at the end the only one's that got hurt were the kids. After all the time & effort to earn an opportunity they had it pulled away for year with no reason. On the bright side, it does make Tom and the coaching staff feel unbelievable that these guys believed in Iowa and were willing to give up a year to stay with us to help them obtain their goals.

4. Are you Married or Single?
DS: Single, but I do have a significant other (Allyson). I met her in VA and now she back in Iowa with me.
5. I am sure you learn much with Brands and Gable around. But what enhancements does each person bring to you in your coaching style?
DS: From Tom the main thing
I have learned thus far is the ability to adapt to recruits/wrestlers. Iowa wrestling has Standards, those standards are to be held on
and off the mat. I'm learning to handle each as an individual
to get results. Not everyone is the same, so the ability to make adjustments, not compromises, that will allow the wrestlers potential to be met. From Gable, his presence alone is a lesson. But to point one thing out, I would say the way he takes the time to know his wrestlers. He test them on and off the mat to get reactions and responses. What he gains is great insight which will allow
for better results in coaching.
5a. Does he still test you?
DS: Yes.

6. If you had to sum up Iowa wrestling style. What would
you tag it with?

DS: Aggressive Attacking Offense
7. You mention Iowa Standards in a earlier question. Can you dwell into that Standard a bit?
DS: Hawkeye wrestling throughout it history has had certain wrestler types that did what they did to a degree that no others attempted. That Standard of work ethic, focus on and off the mat and determination to reach their goals worked. Today we are working hard to build our team with wrestlers that are willing to work within and above that proven Standard.
8. Does that Iowa Wrestling Standard infringe on certain wrestling styles?
DS: Not at All. As I mentioned earlier we make adjustments to our Proven Standards to get the most out of the wrestler. If anything we enhance the wrestlers ability to win. At the end of the day the Standard of excellence is the ultimate goal for both us the coaches and the wrestler.
9. You are currently competing in the National Circuit, next months the trials, What are your thoughts leading into that event?
DS: I have been working out smarter, really taking the time to be prepared mentally and physically. I have beaten all these guys at one time, but never all on the same day. At this level the smallest things make a difference. With Tom's and Coach Gables training assistance I hope to get it done.
10. What does a typical training week look like for you?
DS:I workout 6 days a week. I day of active resting (Cross training). Start morning with run and flow drilling. After lunch I wrestle live, in the evening endurance lifting and core strength building.
BONUS: What makes a great recruit to Iowa?
DS: In our eyes, wrestling style and how they compete. Specifically we are looking for wrestlers that can score points, rise to the occassion be it winning or losing.

UFC73 Full Contact Fighter Podcast
155lbs. Mark Bocek vs Frank Edgar

UFCtakedown EXCLUSIVE: Frank Edgar interview
Posted by UFCtakedown on June 13th, 2007

UFC 73 is a stacked card with the likes of Anderson Silva, Forrest Griffin, Tito Ortiz, and Sean Sherk. One fight not to be overlooked is at 155 with Jersey boy Frankie Edgar taking on the Canadian Mark Bocek.

We caught up with Edgar at Extreme Challenge 78 , where he was helping his fellow Rhino Fight Team -mates get ready for their fights that night. Frankie is such a chill guy he let us pepper him with all sorts of questions. Bottom line is this guy is focused, training balls out, and ready to fight Mark Bocek at UFC 73.

(UFCtakedown questions asked by Matt and Handsome Tom)

Matt : What drives you?
Frankie: “What pushes me is that I like to win, you know what I mean? I hate losing and I enjoy competition, I enjoy working out and there's nothing better than training.”

Tommy : How often do you train?
Frankie : “When I'm training for a fight, I train 6 days a week, 2 times a day. Sometimes ill take ½ a day off here and there.”

Tommy : How long are the sessions?
Frankie : “2-3 hours a session…so I'm getting it in man, tap into everything. I'm traveling all over the place; I go to Philly twice a week. You know I'm not just limiting myself to what's around me, I'm trying to get at it wherever it may be.”

Matt : Rob (Coach Rob Guarino) mentioned you're doing some jiu-jitsu, some boxing…
Frankie : “Yeah, I got a boxing coach in Millstone…I'm all over the fucking place.”

Matt : What specific skills are you building up to prepare for Bocek?
Frankie : “Yeah, he's nasty on the ground, that's his deal, and I just know I have to be extra careful, more careful than I have been with any other opponent. But I have been working my hands too, and hopefully I can lay my hands on ‘em a little more. He thinks he's gonna take me down, granted it could happen, but I'm gonna try to keep standing as long as I can, if it hits the ground, I'll be ready for that.

Matt : So you have a game plan to keep it on your feet?
Frankie : “I don't like to ever say I have a game plan, because if it fails, you're mentally fucked. But yeah, I'd like to keep it on my feet but if I take it to the ground, or if he takes it to the ground than I'll be ready for that.”

Matt : Yeah, a lot of guys say that once you get cracked a couple of times, the game plan goes out the window.
Frankie : “Exactly.”

Tommy : Where do you see yourself right now as far as conditioning wise, do you feel you're at your best?
Frankie : “Yeah, I'm just about right there. If I could fight tomorrow I would. I'm always in shape. That has been my thing in my career. With my wrestling career, I'm usually the guy that's in better shape. A little bit is natural, but I push myself harder everyday.”

Tommy : We find that the fighters with the wrestling core are well conditioned.
Frankie : “Yeah, wrestling brings that work ethic more so than any of these other facets of fighting, I think. Like cutting weight all the time, to practicing all the time and being hardnosed – that comes with wrestling. I'm in shape and I got another 4 weeks to make it all peak at the right time.”

Tommy : What's the craziest thing that ever happened to you when it comes to MMA?
Frankie : “I got a piece of my ear kicked off my head in one of my fights. My first fight was an unsanctioned fight in the Bronx; I took a knee to the face within the first couple seconds. Later that night, I was out to eat with my family, I blew my nose and the whole left side of my face puffed up with air because I opened up my sinus passage. And being a wild kid, I'm sitting there trying to push it up through my eye with a couple of my buddies.”

Matt : You're a stand up guy and I noticed you don't talk shit. Like Tito just did an interview and he's talking shit about Rashad.
Frankie : “Yeah, that's not my thing, I don't talk shit.”

Matt : Who's your favorite fighter?
Frankie :” I don't have a favorite fighter; I definitely like a lot of fighters. I like watching St. Pierre. My goal is to be as well rounded as possible and I think Georges is really well rounded. You gotta respect St. Pierre because he's a class act all the way. Fedor is obviously the best fighter and those guys are great. I like ‘em all, you start watching one guy you start to like him more, you know. I'm just an absolute fan of the sport.”

Matt : How are Dana White and the other guys at the UFC?
Frankie : “Dana and them are all good guys. Every time I have dealt with them, they have been real nice guys, Dana's nice guy, and only good things to say about him.”

Tommy : If we were in an office environment, you hear some ball bag ask you ‘where do you see yourself in 5 years'. Let's cut that down to a year. Where do you see yourself in a year?
Frankie : “A year. I see myself still grinding it out. I'm only on my second fight. I have a 3 fight deal. In a year or so, after my third fight, hopefully renegotiate if it all goes well.”

Tommy : How old are you?
Frankie : “I'm 25. So you figure I got alotta years left.”

Tommy : You fucking right you do! I'm only 27, and what are you trying to say here Frankie? HA
Frankie : “HAHA”

Tommy : I know you're gonna kick my ass but I'm still gonna defend myself.
Frankie : “Yeah, I just wanna stay healthy and keep fighting, ya know.”

Matt : Anything else you wanna add to pump up your fight.
Frankie : “Like you said about Tito talking shit, a lot of people talk shit, that's not my deal. To me, in this sport there is no need to act like a tough guy because their gonna find out anyway, right? So, July 7, were gonna find out, that's it.”

Tommy : What would you like people to know about Frankie Edgar that they might not already know?
Frankie : “That I'm just a normal dude from the Jersey shore, been to Seaside, getting in street fights…you know just a normal guy, as normal as it gets.”

Matt : Are you watching the Ultimate Fighter?
Frankie : “Yeah.”

Matt : What do you think about it?
Frankie : “I think there's a lot of tough guys on that show and I'm impressed with a lot of those guys.”

Matt : What about Pulver and Penn?
Frankie : “I'm probably gonna have to go with Penn on that one. But Penn has a tendency to get lackadaisical going into the 2nd and 3rd round and loses fights…Penn's just a bigger guy.”

Matt : Pulver's an animal.
Frankie : “Pulver's tough too, I love watching him fight. He's a little dude and he BANGS! That's like me, I'm a little guy too so you gotta like those guys, you know.”

5. At what age did you start wrestling?
Age 6

6. Can you name your 3 favorite matches including HS, College and World Competition?
DP: Honestly, I cant trim it to 3, butI I can get it down to 4. Number One, Sophmore Year NJSIAA State Title, Number two & three, both NCAA Titles,Number four, Bronze Medal match at last years Worlds
6. Currently what goals are you focused on?
World Title and Olympic Gold
7.How many Days a week do you train?
DP: Currently I am training 6 days a week. Breaking up the week into different training activities. I lift 4 days a week, but I like to train wrestling by wrestling. I start with stretching then go into a good hard drill. Drilling turns to specific sparring then to situations with resistance. "Work on things that are not World Class"
8. Who is the biggest impact wrestler in you life? Impact coach/s in HS, and now in World competition preparation?
DP: Impact wrestler is my cousin Glenn Pritlaff. Watching him win States set me on my way. Sub-High School and High School Coaching would be Ernie Monaco and my Dad, Don Sr. At this point in my career Shawn Bormet has really taken me under his wing.
9. As the Assistant at Winsconsin, what type of kid makes a Badger?
DP: Personally I look for potential and a willingness to learn both in the classroom and on the mat. Ultimately, I want to see a focused work ethic with a relentless quest for knowledge. The ability to take constructive criticism and the ability to make adjustments based on that criticism.
10. If you had to name your own Wrestling Tag or HeadStone what PHRASE would you use?
DP: Brilliant at the Basics
BONUS: What do you think makes you so successful?
My preparation, which builds my confidence. I know I prepare better and train harder than anyone I wrestle. I think about that all the time when I train and in my tough matches. I prepare to win, I believe I will win and I am willing to do what it takes to get my hand raised in victory.
